Is the industry ready for Sy? I think not!Īim: To launch a LIVE music night with a twist aimed predominantly at soul lovers. Overall Sy has produced her stongest album to date. Intense, inspirational, diverse, abstract, addictive, intriguing helped along by guests Bilal Salaam on “Overthought”, Sy experiments vocally on an indulgent mid-tempo soul beat and then exposes another funkier side with Wes Felton on “Reach Down in Your Soul.” I can safely say that this album doesn’t contain any track below parr, the quality and standard is almost sickening on this third offering. This striking underground soul artist is highly visible as featured background singer along with Kenya (lala) Hathaway, daughter of Donnie and Sharlotte Gibson on American Idol but is also widely known and respected on the soul scene and never fails to deliver as one that is in a class of her own. With her angel-like vocals tracks like “Conflict, Overthought, B-side Love Affair and Star” take to the fore as standout tracks. She aspires to make her music neo, soul/ R&B, funky, jazzy, classical and astonishingly mind bending achieved by borrowing from times gone to create something new and exciting. Sy Smith boasts a Curriculum Vitae that lists Whitney Houston, Me’Shell N’degeocello, Usher, Brandy, Macy Grey, Ginuwine, Eric Benet as previous successful projects. The emmy nominated producer, writer and performer along with additional beats by producer’s Ant Bell – Jill Scott, Kindred Ty Macklin - Erykah Badu Steve Cantanzaro – Modern Groove Assembly and Dre King delivers an album quite frankly head and shoulders above it’s peers.
